Viewers can enjoy her carefully constructed compositions and complex color schemes at the surface level but if they dig a little deeper they can find another level of thoughts about dreams and life experiences |
| Chalet Comellas was born in Tampa and raised in Ybor City. She has a BFA from the University of Tampa and has been an art educator in area schools. She currently teaches at the Academy of the Holy Names. Chalet's artwork is in many private and corporate collections and has been included in statewide and national art competitions. Her work will be featured in a solo exhibition this summer at the Lake Eustis Museum of Art. |

ARTIST'S STATEMENT BY CHALET |
|
Throughout history many cultures have developed images that reflect symbolic significance. The symbols served to teach their beliefs and pass on evidence of their unique experience. A similar desire to create a visual vocabulary to communicate ideas led me to use symbolic imagery in my own artwork.
The main focus of my work is to create symbolic expressions of the modern psychological condition by referencing archetypal symbolism. I explore the connection that is made between the conscious part of our mind, the part that relates to the physical world around us, and the unconscious mind where spontaneous reactions are formed.
My work is typically made up of patterned areas juxtaposed with stylized images. The patterns and images represent the way the subconscious and conscious work together to create meaning by assigning symbolic importance to things. It is through this process a person can connect with the world in on a deeper, more meaningful level. |
